Demystifying Second Series
Demystifying Second Series
A three-part Ashtanga course exploring practice, philosophy, modifications, and confidence-building for dedicated Ashtanga students.
Second Series has a reputation for being intimidating - but it doesn't have to be.
This three-part course is designed to make Second Series approachable, understandable and enjoyable. Whether you're taking your first steps into the sequence or looking to deepen your understanding, you'll gain the confidence, knowledge and practical tools to make the practice your own.
I've wanted to offer this course for a long time, and I'm delighted it's finally here.
Each morning begins with a traditional counted Second Series practice, with modifications offered throughout so you can practise in a way that works for your body. After a short break, we'll spend the rest of the morning exploring the sequence in depth.
Together we'll work through the postures one by one, looking at the count, alignment, modifications and the intention behind each pose. We'll also explore how Primary and Second Series complement one another, why the sequences are taught as they are, and practical ways to integrate both into your own practice.
You'll leave with:
A clear understanding of the Second Series sequence and the traditional count.
Practical modifications and progressions for every stage of the practice.
A deeper appreciation of the purpose and "essence" of each posture.
Insight into how Primary and Second Series work together.
The confidence to continue exploring Second Series safely and intelligently.
Fresh enthusiasm and motivation to roll out your mat.
Who is this course for?
This course is ideal for students who have been practising Ashtanga consistently for at least one year.
You don't need to have started Second Series already - just a regular Primary Series practice, an open mind and a curiosity to learn.
Course Structure
Each day begins with a counted Second Series practice, where modifications are always welcome. After a short break, we'll spend the remainder of the morning exploring different aspects of the sequence in detail.
-
The philosophy and intention behind Second Series
Understanding the opening section of the sequence
Backbending principles, preparation and technique
-
Linking postures and building flow
The Eka Pada sequence
Intelligent transitions, modifications and progressions
-
Arm balances
Headstands and inversions
Bringing the sequence together with greater understanding and confidence
Throughout the course we'll explore:
The traditional count for each posture.
Intelligent modifications and progressions.
The purpose and benefits of every pose.
Traditional context and mythology where relevant.
What I like to call the "essence of the pose"—what each posture is really asking of us, why it's valuable, and how we can experience its benefits whether we're practising the full expression or a modification.
